Nursys License Verification Guide

Nursys is the national nursing license database run by NCSBN, and it does three things: a free public lookup called QuickConfirm, a paid license verification for endorsement that costs $30 per license type per jurisdiction, and a free reminder service called e-Notify. For most nurses, the only time you’ll pay Nursys anything is when you apply for a license in a new state.

Here’s how each service works, what it costs, and when the state board site is the better tool.

What is Nursys?

Nursys is NCSBN’s database of nurse license and discipline information, fed by the state boards of nursing that participate. According to NCSBN, participating boards report license status, expiration dates, and public disciplinary actions, which is what makes a single national lookup possible. The boards remain the source of truth; Nursys is the aggregator.

That distinction matters. Nursys shows you what a board reported, not something Nursys decided on its own. If a status looks wrong, the fix happens at the board, and Nursys updates when the board’s feed does.

How does Nursys QuickConfirm work?

QuickConfirm is the public search. Enter a name or license number, pick the license type, and Nursys returns license status, expiration, and any public discipline reported by participating boards. You can download the report, which is what many employers file as part of primary source verification.

QuickConfirm is the fastest way to see every state where a nurse holds a license, because it pulls from all participating boards at once. That’s something no single state lookup can do.

The limitation: not every board participates fully. Some boards report license data but not discipline, or report only certain license types. If a search comes back empty, that doesn’t prove the nurse is unlicensed; go to the state’s own lookup, which our license lookup tool links for every state.

How much does Nursys verification for endorsement cost?

$30 per license type, per jurisdiction you’re endorsing into. That’s the fee NCSBN publishes, and it works like this:

• One RN license to one new state: $30.
• RN and LPN/VN licenses to the same new state: $60.
• RN license to two new states: $60, because each destination is a separate request.
• RN licenses in three states, endorsing to one new state: still $30. One fee covers every license of that type you hold from participating boards.

Verification is the step that proves to the new board that your existing license is real, active, and unencumbered. You request it through Nursys, pay online, and Nursys transmits the record to the destination board. It replaces the older paper verification forms most boards used to require, and it’s usually the fastest piece of an endorsement application.

Two cautions. First, confirm the destination board accepts Nursys verification before you pay; the board’s endorsement page will say so. Second, Nursys verification covers the license itself, not the rest of the application, so you’ll still owe the new state’s endorsement fee, fingerprints, and whatever else it requires.

What does Nursys e-Notify do?

e-Notify sends free reminders when your license is coming up for renewal and alerts you when your license status changes at a participating board. You enroll with your NCSBN ID, and you can choose email or SMS. Institutions can enroll a list of nurses and get the same alerts for their whole staff, which is how many hospitals track expirations without manual checks.

One honest caveat: e-Notify only knows what participating boards report. If your board doesn’t feed Nursys, or reports late, the reminder may not come. Treat it as a backup to your own calendar, not a replacement.

When should you use the state board site instead of Nursys?

Use the board’s own lookup when you need the primary record, when a board doesn’t fully participate in Nursys, or when the detail you need isn’t in the Nursys report. Board sites typically show the actual disciplinary orders and consent agreements, while QuickConfirm shows that discipline exists. Board sites also update on their own schedule, which can be faster than the Nursys feed.

Some boards route verification through their own systems for certain purposes. California is the standard example: its BRN uses BreEZe, and depending on what you’re verifying, the board may want that path instead of Nursys. We can’t keep a current list of every board’s participation rules, so the practical answer is to check the board’s page every time.

A simple rule: Nursys for breadth (every state at once, reminders, endorsement verification), the board site for depth (orders, definitions, anything that will be used in a hiring or legal decision).
