Restricted Practice

CRNA: state has NOT opted out of the CMS Medicare physician-supervision requirement; physician supervision is required for CRNA anesthesia services under Medicare. State scope may differ.

Prescriptive Authority: T.C.A. § 63-7-103(a)(2)(D): CRNA may select, order, or administer anesthesia drugs, but only for services ordered by a physician/dentist/podiatrist and provided in a required collaborative (cooperative working) relationship with the ordering provider.

Note: As of January 1, 2025, entry-level nurse anesthetist programs must be doctoral (DNP or DNAP). CRNAs educated prior to this date with an MSN remain eligible.
