LVN/LPN License FAQs

LVN (Licensed Vocational Nurse) and LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) are the same profession with different names depending on the state:

• LVN is used in California and Texas
• LPN is used in all other 48 states

The education, exam (NCLEX-PN), scope of practice, and job duties are identical. If you move between states, your license transfers—you just use the local terminology.

LVN/LPNs provide basic nursing care under the supervision of RNs or physicians. Common duties include:

Permitted tasks:

• Taking vital signs
• Administering medications (with some restrictions)

• Patient monitoring and documentation

Typically NOT permitted:
