What is a multistate license?
A multistate license is issued by your primary state of residence (if it's an NLC member state) and allows you to practice nursing in all other NLC member states without obtaining additional licenses. It's a single license with multi-state privileges.
Can I get a multistate license if I live in a non-compact state?
No. To obtain a multistate license, your primary state of residence must be an NLC member state. If you live in a non-compact state, you will need to apply for individual licenses in each state where you want to practice.
What if I move to a different state?
If you move to a new state, you must apply for a license in that new state within 30-60 days of establishing residency. If your new state is an NLC member, you can apply for a multistate license there. Your old multistate license will become inactive.
Is there an additional fee for a multistate license?
There is no additional "compact fee" for a multistate license. You pay the standard licensing fees to your home state, and the multistate privilege is included. Some states may charge slightly higher base fees to cover administrative costs.
